Usage note on conflating, merging/smearing together[edit]

I imagine the sense of conflating, merging/smearing together arose from an outcome of the elision process.

Take as an example Part Two (or Café Yemen?). I'm not going to attempt the IPA transcription, but leaving out a sound in the middle (elision), which would be a natural way of speaking (apart from very careful enunciation), and the consequence is that the two words get run together.

If so, is the current usage note a bit strong/prescriptivist?
