The following is quoted from The C Programming Language by Kernighan and Ritchie (Prentice Hall Software Series) 2nd edition 1988 →ISBN page 37

Certain characters can be represented in character and string contants by escape sequences like \n (newline); these sequences look like two characers, but represent only one.
