I just checked the Dutch wikipedia for this word and they claim the French flotte is from Old Norse floti according to [1]. However, the first etymology on that page suggests the French is actually from Old English? I don't understand that. All attested around 1710, perhaps that can be included. 81.68.255.36 11:28, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dutch word is Flottielje which would argue a different etymology
