Does this have a political connotation, that the (population of the) state is conservative? - -sche (discuss) 01:34, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
- Not exactly. I think when used pejoratively, the connotation is comparable to "out in the boondocks". An unsophisticated backwater place with parochial people.
