The usage notes for this entry are written in a way that seems to firmly decry the very existence of the word focussed, and yet provide no citations for any of the claims made. What is this claimèd 'rule' of UK spelling, which, even if it does exist, seems quite objectionable to me, on the basis that there is no way to tell which syllable of the word should be accented other than by doubling of the very letter whereof complaint is here being made? I dispute that the spelling is so irregular considering that, if one were reading according to established orthographic conventions—without respect to prior knowledge of how the word is formed—I hardly see in my own understanding it should be a point of contention that focused would be read /fəˈkjuːzd/. — This unsigned comment was added by BenYaMan (talkcontribs) at 21:26, 11 February 2020‎ (UTC).Reply
