There is definitely a use of the term as an ethnonationalist dogwhistle, but I question whether the current form of the article presents it accurately. In particular, giving the etymology as 'an abbreviation of “far right ethno-nationalist”' seems implausible; I'm fairly sure that is instead a backronym that people came up with after the fact. Compare the development of the originally innocuous meme Pepe the frog. More documentation would be useful, although this is probably difficult given the places where the term has/had the most use. --Urszag (talk) 01:40, 8 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Testusers(questionmark) (talk) 18:19, 31 January 2022 (UTC) research on this may be difficult, i will edit this when i find an archive of the post: the third etimology is a fabricated dog whistle with a fake meaning created by 4chan users (in resposne/retaliation to a reddit post) to turn common imageboard/messageboard slang into "far right dog whistles" the actual use of that word has nothing to do with that and its often used as a way to make fun of people oblivious to its meaning and use. as an additional point the term is associated with the 4chan meme apu but that's because it's basically babytalk for friend. its a term used in unfortunate circumstances that facilitated the fabrication of a fake meaning that people out of the loop fell for. editing with various examples https://archive.4plebs.org/pol/thread/212400076/#q212402095 https://archive.4plebs.org/pol/thread/212400076/#q212403073 https://archive.4plebs.org/pol/thread/212400076/#q212403073Reply

Noting the alt right dog whistle definition gets buried easily[edit]

I basically see fren used as an alt right dog whistle, or by people who are so surrounded by such they don't recognize it. This page looks good, but I wanted to point out that on alternatives like Urban Dictionary the alt right dog whistle definitions get buried, via votes.

Well, we just changed it to put the generic definition on top. Personally, while the term may be popular on the alt-right, I dont see how it could be numerically anywhere close to being the primary use of the term, so I asked for the definitions to be untangled. I think it's possible the reason the Urban Dictionary puts the generic friend sense on top is simply that it really is the most common use of the term. Soap 12:09, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
