Adjective[edit]

gamer

  1. Comparative of game; more willing to participate.

There is no comparative form "gamer" of the adjective "game." --Connel MacKenzie 05:28, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Restored. Found in Google Books: "This little chap's even gamer nor t'other one.". Equinox 15:35, 15 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Video games[edit]

Just a historical note: I didn't see "gamer" for players of video games until relatively recently (perhaps circa 2000). The high-street UK video games magazines of the '80s and '90s did not seem to use the term. It was "players" instead. Equinox 15:40, 15 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, never mind. Maybe I'm wrong. Just found some counterexamples: [1]. Equinox 15:42, 15 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Archaic sense[edit]

There is an archaic sense not listed here. I'm not sure what, some kind of container or storage building? The Tempest, act 4, scene 1:

Earth's increase, foison plenty,
Barns and gamers never empty;
Vines with clust'ring bunches growing;
Plants with goodly burden bowing;
Spring come to you at the farthest,
In the very end of harvest!

Or maybe "gamer" here is a scanno in this Gutenberg etext for "garners".
Yes, see garner: it's a granary. Equinox 03:41, 27 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Added today: "(pejorative, internet slang) A person with racist or bigoted views." Certainly video gamers get accused of this, but I've never seen it as a separate sense of the word. Equinox 17:54, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

This isn't really pejorative, it's more just a meme. Like referring to historical figures as "le epic gamer XD", or events as "heated gamer moments". See [2], [3].__Gamren (talk) 22:32, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
See also "gamer word". I think it's mostly used attributively. Colin M (talk) 20:42, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
It looks like its more someone who is cynical and snarky than someone specifically racist or bigoted. Kiwima (talk) 23:12, 10 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
