The connotation seems slightly off[edit]

In science, getting your hands dirty means actually touching things with your hands. Experimentalists are often more highly regarded than theoreticians. Back when sexism drove employment decisions, women often relegated to the role of doing calculations.

I am not going to edit the page because I am unfamiliar with Wiktionary policy on nearly identical co-definitions of a word. But perhaps something like the following is in order:

  1. (idiomatic) To get involved with the unpleasant parts, or the lowest levels, of a task, or to perform the manual part of a task.
