Talk:giros

Locally where I'm at (in the middle of the coterminous USA), this sandwich is called a gyro (pronounced "YEAR-oh"), and the plural is gyros. Does somebody want to clarify this? Thanks.

Recent popular borrowings tend to lack any "officialness" in their spellings. I bet there are lots of variations. We should talk about them here and add them to the article as we discover them. I'll keep my eyes open in Sydney (:

Also, I don't think the term "sandwich" is good for describing a giros. In American English "sandwich" covers a far greater semantic field than in other Englishes, including hamburgers, subs, and apparently from reading this definition, stuff wrapped in pita, lately often called "wraps" by other fast food vendors. In Australia a sandwich is only between two slices of bread. I wonder what the usage is in Britain - anybody know? — Hippietrail 23:45, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)
