Hmm the etym is a bit tricky. Encarta says it came straight from Sanskrit. Collins says it can via Hindi. They both agree on the 17th century for its appearance in English though. AHD, M-W, and etymonline.com also say via Hindi. — Hippietrail 21:30, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
