Etymology[edit]

Wikipedia is still blocking all edits from all China's main VPN options but note that their hoppo article is almost certainly wrong about confusion over the term's origin. They have a single cite for their doubt but its reasoning appears to be entirely mistaken: Not only were the imperial customs ultimately under the Board of Revenue as a general principle and not only was the Canton Hoppo the head of the only part of the Board of Revenue that foreign merchants encountered early on, but the exact words "Hubu" were part of the guanbu's formal title: Duli Guangdongshen Yanhai Dengqu Maoyi Shuiwu Hubu Fensi (。。。理广东省。。。贸易。。。户部分司, "Commissioner of the Board of Revenue in Charge of the Customs Duties for the Maritime Trade in Guangdong Province", per Grant, p. 58). The Chinese characters are available here but they're in seal script so I can't read them exactly. — LlywelynII 09:48, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
