Necessarily a pseudonym?

[edit]

I'm surprised if this is a necessary part of the definition. I can see a few scenarios in which a name can be ironic:

  • A fictional character named ironically, e.g. Lennie Small in Of Mice and Men
  • A reverse form of nominative determinism, e.g. possibly Frank Beard prior to 2013, though I don't really know what influenced his choices in this regard
  • A child being named by his/her parents, or a pet being named by his/her owner, in a deliberately ironic way
  • Occurring naturally, e.g. when a person having the surname Young reaches old age, or more generally when somebody turns out in a way contrary to his/her name
  • A term coined as an irony, e.g. apparently the coiner of the term "elegant variation" actually hated the phenomenon
  • A work, etc. named in an ironic way

I'd be surprised if none of these constitutes an ironym.... — Smjg (talk) 22:56, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
