In "Usage notes: Prior to World War II, it was an offensive insult, implying filthiness. Now considered a mild or rather dated term." I suspect this change had something to do with the widespread availability of cheap pesticides like DDT around the time of WWII, or maybe I'm wrong and it had something to do with the conditions during the war itself. It would be nice to have more information about why the WWII time period caused a change in the offensiveness of this word. Tumacama 17:00, 6 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
