the misspelling theory[edit]

I remember reading somewhere once that this was most likely a mistrancscription of ménage dating from a time when it would have been spelled mesnage and when medieval calligraphy would have made it easy to misread. I'll try to track down what I read, but it might be difficult. In the meantime, though, the Collins dictionary lists this theory. It's worth noting perhaps that if this theory is true, there could never have been a *mesuagium or anything with a Latin ending on .... it would need to have been in French only.
