Poor referencing, and I'm not convinced that Euodos and Horophylax, both mentioned, are actually real [fictional] things. GreyishWorm (talk) 10:57, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

For context: this was transwikied from Wikipedia in 2007, and after the usual formatting changes to make it a Wiktionary entry it was pretty much ignored by everyone but the bots. Chuck Entz (talk) 20:48, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Whoever originally made it misinterpreted the source and bungled the entry. The general idea in Usener is that in ancient religion particularly awe-inspiring or otherwise significant phenomena were experienced as "momentary gods", and when these concepts of divinity persisted beyond the immediate experience of the phenomena themselves they congealed into "special gods". In the Kroll article cited, Horophylax and Euodos are just cited as "special gods" in the sense that they have a very limited remit, but they're specifically distinguished from momentary gods (which Kroll rejects as a historical theory). I've removed the wrong usage notes, fixed the definition and citation, and added a link so the latter can be read on archive.org. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 01:05, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
