I actually think this is more likely to be a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of gia (, “house; home”), resulting from the ‹nh› – ‹gi› confusion in some ancient regional variety. Compare nhai (, “street”) < 19th-century (in Taberd's Dictionary) giai. Wyang (talk) 11:12, 2 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've seen suggestions nhà comes from 庌 (SV: nhã) which apparently means horse stable, hall; living room house for guests to rest. Vien.Vu1 (talk) 06:16, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
