In sense 1, "A small detail that is nice or polite to have but isn't necessary," is there really an authority for "nice or polite to have?" Isn't that a mistake that unsophisticated speakers make with this word, using it to mean something akin to a pleasantry when in actuality it refers to an insignificant, fussy, or pedantic detail -- not a minor positive but a minor-to-moderate negative?
