Previous version of this page said that perisperm was derived from the "nucleus." That makes no sense, in that an entire tissue cannot be derived from an intracellular organelle. Perisperm is derived from the NUCELLUS, i.e. the diploid maternal tissues of the megasporangium. It only proliferates and serves as a nutritive tissue in some seeds, notably those of the order Caryophyllales, such as beets, cacti, etc. In most other plants, nutritive tissue for the developing seed is either endosperm or embryonic (cotyledon) tissue. — This comment was unsigned.
