What's the difference between a pianist and a piano player? At Carnegie Hall, I'd expected a pianist. At church, I might get either one. In a bordello or saloon, I'd probably find a piano player. --Ed Poor 21:14, 5 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Answering my own question: in a rock band, the musician who plays a grand piano or upright piano would not be called a pianist but a piano player. The word pianist seems too snooty or "classical" in this context. --Ed Poor 14:10, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

pronunciation[edit]

Is it PEanist or peANist? GreaseballNYC (talk) 13:39, 14 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

I've only heard the pronunciation with the accent on the first syllable (I'm in California), and the New Oxford American Dictionary app on my computer only gives that version, but that doesn't mean the other pronunciation doesn't exist or is necessarily wrong.
