@Bogdan; are you sure it wasn't from Hungarian? Taking into consideration that Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/sabľa itself is considered to be foreign, maybe the Hungarian origin is a better fit. --Robbie SWE (talk) 17:14, 3 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

I assume the reason why DEX chose Old Slavic rather than Hungarian is that there is a phonetic mismatch with Hungarian, whereas the Slavic word fits phonetically:
  • on early Hungarian loans, "ly" was borrowed as "l" (as in gulyás to gulaș or Erdély to Ardeal).
  • whereas Proto-Slavic ľ turned into "i" (as in ľubiti to iubi or kraľь to crai)
