   I get sense 1 completely (and value the insight it provides into the more recent senses), but sense 2,

"... especially something not easily found or procured."

seems to me perhaps a little off, not an important part of its meaning(s). What's more significant to the senses and connotations i'm used to reading in, is informality or extemporaneousness that i would express by adding in

"[,] while relying on chance, rather than a set plan, to decide the means [of getting it]".
