Talk:see you later alligator

Please note that the book "The Story of the English Language", Revised Edition, by Mario Pei attributes the phrase 'see you later' and 'alligator' to Cockney rhyming slang in use in California in the 1850's. (Please see the bottom of page 191 for this text.) Does 'in a while' and 'crocodile' have the same background?
