Rfv-sense "(heraldry) A bearing representing only one part of a rounded object." I haven't been able to find e.g. roundels referred to as segments of spheres, or something referred to as a segment of a cannonball, etc. Most instances I find of segment in heraldry are using the general sense (X is the most important segment of heraldry, a line of partition divides segments of the shield, etc). Perhaps this was a (mis?)understanding of some works that refer to flanches as "the segment of a circle of large diameter projecting into the field from either side", but that seems to be the geometric if not the general sense (or at least, not this sense as written). - -sche (discuss) 19:09, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
