Smash mouth etymology[edit]

The etymology is not clear enough yet- if this word came from American football, is there any explanation why this combination of two words and not another became connected with the idea of violence or aggressiveness? For example, why "mouth" instead of face? I'm sure there's some "smash-face" in football. Everyone is clear how 'smash' could be related to football, but why is the mouth singled out in particular? "smash-shoulder" didn't become a phrase either. Is there a particular common injury related the mouth that is being referenced? Do football players smash each others mouths? Is smashing a form of punching in this context? How is the mouth smashed? --Geographyinitiative (talk) 08:54, 15 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
