- Don't know really. It seems one could construct a very large number of these. We do have freezing cold, and "chilling cold" doesn't work for some reason (it would be a noun phrase). Equinox ◑ 16:25, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Equinox: Yes... It seems to hold true for hot (apparently you can also say searing hot, piping hot, boiling hot - oh wait, these ones have entries) and wet (sopping wet, soaking wet, wringing wet, dripping wet) especially. The behaviour of other adjectives seems more rigid; as you say, cold doesn't admit such variation.
- I'm gathering those at Category:English compound adjectives. The ones I've found so far are freezing cold, hopping mad (+steaming mad, raving mad?), and roaring drunk (which I've just created).
