Should there be a mention that nowadays a lot of people write snicker because snigger looks to much like nigger? I have English a 2nd language, learned it some 30 years ago and I was very surprised that the spelling had changed... —This unsigned comment was added by 87.211.115.30 (talk) at 14:43, 25 October 2010 (UTC).
- I don't think the spelling has changed much. In fact I thought the two words were different but similar words at first, until I checked the etymology for confirmation. I've seen people use "snickering", but not "snicker" unless the brand name "Snickers" counts as the word. And this might be a reason why "snicker" is now being used more often in the US (if snigger was even the most used in the past compared to snicker). And btw, I first encountered "snigger" through Harry Potter, which is British, so this agrees with the etymology for that word. OjdvQ9fNJWl (talk) 01:09, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
