In Spanish , "stingray is "pastinaca , not "mantarraya"[edit]

since "manta" is the giant horned ray, stinger-less (as is well shown on the iconography). One of the 7 genera of stingrays is "Pastinachus" , and even nowadays along the french coast of the Mediterranean sea , a stingray is called "pastenague" (maybe from the resemblance with the ombelliferous edible root of "Pastinaca edulis" : a bulky body with a slender tail or pivot root...). A "pastinaca" may also sometimes be called in spanish "raya làtigo" ( "làtigo" = "whip") due to its whip-like tail, and burning wound...

A question : what is the word " stingray" in popular Arab ? ( thanks to write it in phonetical, my arab reading is so rusty ... ) T.y. , Arapaima 11:18, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've been told that the ray is "el ouark" . But the stingray ? Arapaima 17:29, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have just added a few translations, and the Arabic as requested by Arapaima. It's سمكة راي لاسع - "a fish of poignant ray" or a transliteration ستينغري in a more colloquial Arabic. --Anatoli 09:14, 29 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
