The third definition (any long thing flexible object) might be a bit overbroad; I bet many languages have a specific translation for string (of an instrument). Birdwatching verb sense: grammatical object[edit]
I note that the 1980 citation mentions "string[ing] a Skylark as a Richard's Pipit" (i.e. the real bird, the skylark, is being strung), while the 2005 citation mentions "trying to string a rarity" (i.e. the fake bird is the one being strung).
