Pronunciation[edit]

"(Classical) IPA: /suˈaː.dus/, [sʊˈaː.dʊs]"

Is that correct? Same question for suecicus.

  • Ellendt-Seyfferts Lateinische Grammatik (38th ed., 1894) states: "gu und su lauten vor einem anderen Vokale derselben Silbe wie gw und sw, also lingua wie lingwa, suada wie swada; dagegen argu-o, su-us." It also mentions modern pronunciations which might make it doubtful, but at least sometimes it's mentioned with jetzt (now): "c lautet wie k; nur vor [..] jetzt wie z [= /t͡s/] gesprochen [...]", "ti vor Vokalen wird jetzt wie zi gesprochen [...]".
  • Allen & Greenough (1903) has: "In the combinations qu, gu, and sometimes su, u seems to be the consonant (w). Thus, aqua, anguis, consuetus (compare English quart, anguish, suave)." It's more vague and has an unexplained "sometimes", but the sometimes could simply be the matter of being followed by another vowel in the same syllabe.

For comparision: lingua has /ʷ/ and suavis, suadeo have /w/ for u; suus has /u/ for both u but has two syllables and not one (su-us, not swus); suebus, Suecia don't have IPA.
(If qu and sometimes gu and sometimes su have a /w/, it would be much easier if it would be spelled qv, gv/gu, sv/su...) -84.161.40.203 08:56, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
