The correct version is: "Third time's the charm". Not "a charm". — This comment was unsigned.

Good question. I also only ever heard the "the" version, but the article here seems to suggested that "a" is the preferred form, while "the" is a variant. Would have been nice to find some evidence or discussion on which is the more common, correct, or original version, and document that - or evidence that English speakers in different countries have different preferences.
