etymology[edit]

is it from:

how we catch the birds on land,
what they do to us (bear with me, since this is how we explain goose#Verb),
what they do to each other (mating dance?), or
onomatopoeia for the birds' call, as indeed with the more common term kittiwake?

I've put these in order from least to most likely but this is all off the top of my head so all four could be far off base. Soap 18:13, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Worth noting that one book says it's commonly used in Europe, where arse is the word for our bottoms, but even so, ass was used in the past, and the word could have hung around even as the bare form of the word changed. Still, i think this is most likely not related to ass except through a light-hearted folk etymology. Soap 18:40, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
