spelling

searching for the original Italian of the Inferno quote brings up both tremoto and tremuoto. i suppose this means that his work has been modernized as it's been republished over the centuries. do we know which is the original? ordinarily i would assume the -o- spelling is older, but in this case, it seems that we may have gone back to Latin in the modern era and so the usual rules of sound change might not apply. —Soap— 08:49, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

@Soap: Dante's own manuscript is long time lost. Modern editions are still a recuperative attempt by comparison of different transcriptions by amanuenses, and have settled on a relatively common text only recently, and for this quote, they have settled on tremoto. To answer your question about which one might be older, I personally believe tremoto was the original form, and that the -u- was added by hypercorrection by some amanuenses, but it's only personal speculation.
