truck driver

Definition:

• A person employed to drive a semi truck.

One of many SOP entries by this contributor over the years. There's no justification for the narrowness of the definition- it's really just someone who drives a truck. More often than not it means someone who drives a truck for a living, but it doesn't have to. Chuck Entz (talk) 04:37, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure... To me at least, it refers specifically to the charming people who drive tractor-trailers professionally, and while someone who drives a pickup truck for example is a truck + driver, they're not a truck driver as such. Besides that I thought that terms for professions are generally kept even when they are sop, e.g. basketball player. Haplogy (話) 01:15, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

I agree. To the extent that it is used with respect to a profession, it seems comparable to tennis player. Saying that someone is "a truck driver" does indeed seem to suggest that they drive a semi for a living. A truck driver is a truck driver, even if he happens to be a sub-compact driver in his private life. bd2412 T 01:24, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

google books:"truckdriver" is easily citable, so it passes per WT:COALMINE. That said, I think the tennis player test is absurd. — Ungoliant ^(falai) 13:27, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

• Keep as a translation target per my tentative personal criterion: The term has to be useful for translation into at least three languages and the three translated terms (i) must be single-word ones and (ii) they must not be closed compounds. One of these days someone will come up with a good challenge to the "tennis player" test, but it looks like this one isn't it. Given the existence of truckdriver and synonyms such as trucker, it's hard to make a case for deletion. Withdrawn. Chuck Entz (talk) 21:55, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
