Tumblr was founded in 2007, but I just found this interesting remark:

  • 2015, Mark Leccese, ‎Jerry Lanson, The Elements of Blogging (page 115)
    But as early as the mid-2000s, some bloggers were experimenting with what were known as “tumblelogs.” Instead of being text-heavy, these featured posts that relied more on images and videos.

I strongly suspect that this book is incorrect, and that (while these blogs no doubt existed) the word tumblelog did not pre-date Tumblr, but came later. Might just be sloppy research (or a rather vague idea of "mid-2000s" that comprehends 2007). Worth investigating, though. Equinox 02:58, 17 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

pitas.com was a very Tumblr-like casual blogging service before 2000. Equinox 14:31, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Equinox: Tumblelogs predate Tumblr. I've added a citation from 2006. Here's another use, from 2005: redhanded.hobix.com. – Jberkel 20:03, 25 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Jberkel: That is really interesting! So Tumblr was named after the earlier concept of tumblelogs? I was there, but I guess I missed that bit. Thanks for your work on the entry. Equinox 05:15, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
