A user or an user[edit]

I've always heard it phrased as "a user" and have always used it as such. Why does this seem to be an exception to the rule?

It's mentioned specifically in an#Usage note - a vs. an is a distinction for vowel sounds. This is a case where the "y" in the pronounced "yus'ur" is a consonant, not a vowel ("...and sometimes Y.") --Connel MacKenzie 10:50, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)
