Hungarian város is from vár, but it's pretty sure that the Iranian language it borrows from is not Persian. This looks like some of those "Wunderwörter" Indo-Iranian borrowings in Uralic, which can be sporadically found. If someone knows the exact source, or Iranian etymon for comparison, it would be worth mentioning it. --Ivan Štambuk 23:53, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Ivan, why are you so sure that the Indo-Iranian language is Persian? There were at least two Indo-Iranian peoples which left the Indo-Iranian homeland and betook themselves towards Europe - Proto-Bulgarians and Alans, both of them North-East Iranian (whereas Persian is West Iranian). Read more carefully, I've said that it's pretty sure that it's not Persian. It's Iranian language alright, but the exact source is apparently untraceable. --Ivan Štambuk 17:54, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
