Pronunciation[edit]
The pronunciation for this word shows only /viːəkl/ but when I watch US films and TV shows I commonly hear a different, more stuttered, pronunciation which is kind of like /viːhikl/. This isn't universal and often seems to be a southern pronunciation but I'm not sure. Anyone know more?--79.34.11.198 21:39, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
- MWOnline has a second pronunciation in line with your suggestion: \ˈvē-ˌhi-kəl\ in their notation. I think of it as a pronunciation of a word that is used only in more formal contexts by speakers who normally use words like car and truck, including many parts of the US. OTOH states that have something like a Department of Motor Vehicles may afford more opportunity for the h-less pronunciation to be heard and repeated. DCDuring TALK 18:01, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
- It's definitely a spelling pronunciation, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's used more by people who are more familiar with the word from written language than from spoken language. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 15:55, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
