The basic meaning seems to be “to drive out”, that is, to make disappear or cause to disappear, generally by coercion or by natural forces. That can refer to residents, or a smell, or evil spirits. If it is a tyrant, one might translate their being driven out using the verb “depose”. And perhaps one might use “dissipate” in its transitive sense for some other things that are made to disappear, although in such cases “dispel” or “disperse” may generally be better choices. I think that these are all basically one and the same sense, and merely represent translation options. Another sense, though, is “to while” (the time).  --Lambiam 13:37, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
