The origin of the word walkman is not walk + man. It is a Japanese amalgamation of two English words. In the same way that English abuses the originally-French word chef (which really only means chief), the word walkman was created most probably because the Japanese had a fixation for English words and probably thought that Americans would think it was a cool name. I hope they've figured out that the name wasn't popular because it was a good name; it's for a lack of a better term that we ever used it.
