couldnt find etymology in the linked source, but wazhashk by itself means muskrat, so perhaps the second part is a fossilized morpheme meaning food or that which is chewed on. i dont think they eat pinecones, but its possible the connection was two steps ... muskrats eat mushrooms, and mushrooms grow like pinecones.
