Language is a living thing! Who'd have thunk it. That is, that the odd sounding, even ugly word "thunk" would be adopted into fairly standard usage. Methinks I hear my labra-doodle barking. Gotta go.

Origins[edit]

Although the citations attest that the phrase predates him, according to Snarky Grammar Guide, "The phrase Who'd a thunk it? was coined way back in the 1930s and '40s by Mortimer Snerd, a ventriloquist dummy voiced by vaudeville star Edgar Bergen. Mortimer was a likeable character, but buck-toothed, slow-witted, and famous for saying, "Duhhh." You can connect the dots."
