Etymology[edit]
First attested as Old English Teng in an Anglo-Saxon charter of 739, probably from Proto-Celtic *tīn (“river”), from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (“to flow”). As such, possibly a doublet of Tyne and Tenna.
