Usage[edit]

This template may be used in "References" and "Further reading" sections, and on talk pages, to cite John Russell Bartlett's Dictionary of Americanisms: A Glossary of Words and Phrases usually Regarded as Peculiar to the United States (1st edition, 1848; 2nd edition, 1850; 3rd edition, 1860; and 4th edition, 1877). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following optional parameters:

  • |edition=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 2nd edition (1850), 3rd edition (1860), or 4th edition (1877), specify |edition=2nd to |edition=4th. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1848).
  • |1= or |entry= – the entry in the work to be cited. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the name of the Wiktionary entry.
  • |2=, |page= or |pages= – the page number(s) of the work cited. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template link to an online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
