Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from John Guillim's work A Display of Heraldrie (1st edition reprint, 1611; 2nd edition, 1632; and 6th edition, 1724); the 1st edition (London: [] William Hall, and are to be sold by Raphe Mab, 1610; →OCLC) is not currently available online. It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

1st edition reprint (1611)
  • |1= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from. If quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Epigram An Epigram Explaining the Frontispice of This Worke
Epistle Dedicatory To His Most Sacred Maiestie
As the above chapters are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=LbxWXIFDr30C&pg=PP11, specify |page=11.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine, in some cases, the part of the work quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.
2nd edition (1632)
  • |edition=mandatory: if quoting from the 2nd edition (1632), specify |edition=2nd. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition reprint (1611).
  • |1= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from. If quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
A Display of Heraldrie (2nd edition)

*To the Courteous Reader 2 To the Courteous Reader
As the above chapters marked with an asterisk (*) are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=PLplAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP9, specify |page=9. (The other chapters are also unpaginated, but the template is able to determine the URL.)

Pagination of the work after page 418 is erratic. If quoting from pages 419–430, specify the correct page number as shown in the table below instead of the incorrect one:

Correct page number Incorrect page number Correct page number Incorrect page number
419 *421 426 *424
422 [unpaginated] 427 *425
423 *421 428 *426

6th edition (1724)
  • |edition=mandatory: if quoting from the 6th edition (1724), specify |edition=6th. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition reprint (1611).
  • |1= or |chapter=mandatory in some cases: the name of the chapter quoted from. If quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
A Display of Heraldry (6th edition)

  • |entry= – if quoting from the dictionary, the name of the entry.
  • |part=mandatory in some cases: the 2nd part of "Analogia Honorum" is itself divided into two parts. If quoting from the 2nd part, specify |part=2. This must be specified for the template to link correctly to the work, as the pagination restarts from 1 in this part.
  • |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
All editions
  • |subchapter= and/or |subchaptername= – if a chapter is subdivided, use |subchapter= to specify the subchapter number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, and/or |subchaptername= to specify the name of the subchapter.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
