Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Edmund Spenser's The Shepheardes Calender (1st edition, 1579). As the original 1579 edition of the work is not currently available online, the template can be used to create a link to one of the following online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |year= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 1586 edition, specify |year=1586. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1890 facsimile of the 1st edition (1579).
  • |gloss= – if quoting from one of the glosses by "E. K.", specify |gloss=1 or |gloss=yes.
  • |1= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from, which will usually be a month of the year, for example |chapter=January. In such cases a fuller chapter name will be automatically provided by the template. For other parts of the work (such as "The Generall Argument of the Whole Booke"), the template will display the chapter name provided.
  • |url= – if quoting from an unpaginated page of the work, use this parameter to manually specify the URL of the webpage to be linked to, like this: |url=https://archive.org/details/shepheardescalen00spen/page/2/mode/1up.
  • |2= or |folio=, and |verso= – mandatory in some cases: instead of page numbers, the pages of the work are numbered by folios. Indicate the folio number, and use |verso=1 or |verso=yes to indicate that the verso (left-hand page) is being quoted from. If |verso= is omitted, the template assumes that the recto (right-hand page) is being quoted from. This parameter must be specified for the template to link to the online version of the work.
  • |folioend= and |versoend=, and |folioref= – if quoting a range of folios, for example, "folios 10, verso – 11, recto", use |folio= and |verso= to specify the folio at the start of the range, and |folioend= and |versoend= (if required) to specify the folio at the end of the range. In addition, use |folioref= and |versoref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears). (If quoting a recto page, omit |versoend= and |versoref=.)
  • |3=, |text= or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |4=, |t=, |translation= – a translation of the passage quoted into modern English.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
  • |termlang= – by default, the template categorizes entries on which it is placed into Category:English terms with quotations. To have the template categorize an entry into Category:Middle English terms with quotations instead, use |termlang=enm.
