URL[edit]

@sgconlaw looks like the URL needs updating again, and the US dictionary has disappeared. – Jberkel 05:40, 11 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Jberkel:, @sgconlaw: Yep, they've partnered with Dictionary.com and moved their English and Spanish dictionaries to the Lexico.com domain (more information about it here and here). Seems like they've removed separate US entries (which were from NOAD). Will have to update OxfordDictionaries.com > Lexico.com and Oxford University Press > Dictionary.com / Oxford University Press. Would have have to remove the separate US/UK links from the template as well [and update/remove the parameter handlers for them], the Documentation will need to updated too. Should wait for sometime to apply these changes but these look to be permanent.
@sgconlaw: I wasn't getting an error on clicking the US entries it just redirected me to the new entry page. Gotitbro (talk) 09:56, 12 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Gotitbro: thanks, that was useful. I noticed from [1] that "Lexico will only provide the (UK) English and Spanish versions of the dictionary. To access the (US) English Dictionary from Dictionary.com content, head to www.dictionary.com." However, words using American spelling such as center and color still appear at Lexico. After a suitable wait for things to stabilize, I'll make the changes that you have identified. I suppose we should also rename this template {{R:Lexico}}? @Sgconlaw: You're right, seems like they've merged the two dictionaries (US (NOAD) and UK (ODE)), keeping UK definitions for the same headwords but preserving US specific entries for different headwords (for e.g., the color definition is directly from NOAD not the ODE (which is at colour). They've simply made it more complicated. Lexico also provides alternative US/UK spellings under appropriate headwords (Oxford tweet). Yes the template should be renamed along with the other changes. ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────@Sgconlaw: The changes at the Lexico website look to be stable and permanent, I think its time to update the template now. Gotitbro (talk) 01:25, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

OK, will do this later. — SGconlaw (talk) 02:33, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
