From Portuguese Timor Leste (Timor-Leste), Timor (Timor) +‎ leste (east). Cognate of Indonesian Timor Timur and Tetum Timor Lorosa'e.

Pronunciation[edit]

Proper noun[edit]

Timor Leste

  1. East Timor, Timor Leste (a country in Southeast Asia occupying half the island of Timor)

Indonesian clearly distinguishes the names for the sovereign state of East Timor or Timor-Leste (Timor Leste) and the former Indonesian province of East Timor, the latter is known as Timor Timur. Unlike English, these terms are not interchangeable in Indonesian.
