Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German truhe, from Old High German truha, related with Trog (trough). An Upper German word that only spread northwards during the 19th century, but has since displaced the northern equivalent Lade (now chiefly restricted to the sense “drawer”, but compare Bundeslade).
