Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! I think it would be prudent that you take a look at WT:ELE to get a feel for how things operate around here, especially in regards to formatting. Thanks! Medellia 07:11, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Quotations[edit]

Thank you for adding another quotation to the disbud entry. However, per the style guide at Wiktionary:Quotations (WT:QUOTE) we do not put quotation marks around the actual quote as we use the indentation to mark a quote as such. If quotation marks are in the source, for example if the sentence you are quoting is the speech of a character in the book, then we use the same style of quotation marks as the source (see glad rags as an example). staple[edit]

Please note that I requested a cleanup for staple due o your edits. I think they are useful, but they are also confusing. Maybe you want to take another look at it. P.S. How about you write a little about yourself on your user page. Or at least include a {{Babel}} template! H. (talk) 11:08, 25 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

pig[edit]

Hi there. You have added a verb definition to the noun section. You really do need to study those welcome links. SemperBlotto 16:25, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

kilt[edit]

Thank you for contributing the verb sense. Please note, however, that you added the Verb section in an incorrect location (I have corrected this). The definition sections should always be placed ahead of any categories or interwikis. --EncycloPetey 01:48, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
