Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Ultimateria (talk) 15:44, 8 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Template:bor vs. Template:der[edit]

You should only use the {{bor}} when the current term was directly borrowed from the other language- "ultimately from" and {{bor}} can never refer to the same thing. For instance, I can't use "{{bor|en|fro|quitter}}" at English quit because it was Middle English that borrowed the word- and I definitely can't say "ultimately from {{bor|en|la|quietus}}" because the Latin term changed into the Old French term at least half a millennium before English even existed, with Old French becoming Middle French at least a century or two before, as well. I also have problems with your stating without qualifiers that Latin words are from Proto-Albanian, but that needs to be discussed with others who know more than I do- this is too obviously and completely wrong according to Wiktionary practice for me to wait for anyone else to weigh in. Unexplained deletions[edit]

Hi there. Whilst we welcome all edits, what we don’t like is the sporadic removing of them for no reason. Having reverted a couple of your edits recently, I’d just like to reiterate that changing the etymology of an Albanian word doesn’t change it in real life. If it’s derived from Serbo-Croatian or has borrowed a term from it, it’s done exactly that regardless of anyone’s preference.

Please don’t let me catch you doing this again. ArbDardh (talk) 20:35, 20 February 2020 (UTC)ArbDardhReply

vicianum[edit]

Hi there. I’m always grateful to see new entries such as these, but make sure to use a capital letter as it is a proper noun. ArbDardh (talk) 12:55, 12 April 2020 (UTC)ArbDardhReply

Formatting[edit]

Hello there. Please take utmost care when creating new entries. Although they are interesting, it is incredibly annoying and a hassle to then have to edit them afterwards, like in οὔθα. ArbDardh (talk) 16:58, 9 May 2020 (UTC)ArbDardhReply

Category:Tbot entries (Albanian)[edit]

Hi! I see you've been working with Albanian recently. Would you be able to check a few of our Albanian entries? The ones in Category:Tbot entries (Albanian) were made by a bot more than 10 years ago, and haven't received any "love". --Dada por viva (talk) 18:53, 7 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

барза[edit]

Hello, you're probably not aware that you have created a Ukrainian entry with an accented Roman letter "á" - "бáрза" as the page title. Please take more care or refrain from editing in languages you don't know. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 23:22, 19 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Edits to Romanian etymologies[edit]

References to Wikipedia articles or appendices are not considered reliable, so I had to revert your edits. I was also forced to revert some of your other edits where a published source was added, because the information could not be corroborated. Please be careful when changing etymologies which are disputed by scholars – we've had in the past (and even to some extent in the present) a lot of disputes when it comes to the Romanian substratum and how it relates to Albanian. In order to avoid further disputes, I advise you to not eliminate ambiguity, it's better to say "[A] possible theory..." or "[A]n alternative theory suggests...", than to eliminate the notion that there are conflicting theories as to the origins of the discussed lemmas. And remember to always back up your statements with credible sources, preferably several if that is possible. Let me know if I can help with anything! --Robbie SWE (talk) 12:10, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Categories[edit]

Hi. It won't work if you just paste a list of words. Categories are automatically computer-generated. Use the {{auto cat}} template. Equinox 15:40, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Removals[edit]

Why did you remove these entries? —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:34, 11 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

IPA[edit]

Why do you use long vowels when you write Albanian words' IPA transcription? FierakuiVërtet (talk) 11:24, 14 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

References[edit]

You need to add

===References===

<references/>

to an entry if you have a reference. Vininn126 (talk) 18:39, 21 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

thikë[edit]

Lumbardhia, please stop edit-warring, insisting that thikë cannot be borrowed from Latin. Thousands of Albanian word are borrowed from Latin. Also see Reconstruction talk:Illyrian/sika. -- Sokkjō 19:22, 11 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Adding categories[edit]

When adding categories, please use {{auto cat}} instead of just creating a manual list, like you did at Category:Albanian terms derived from Lombardic. Theknightwho (talk) 13:50, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
